AGM 2008

The Nepalese Doctors
Association (UK) celebrated its 23rd anniversary this year. The 23rd
AGM was held at Holiday Inn Rotherham,
Sheffield
on 08-10thAug 2008. It was very well attended by its members, families and
friends.
This year there was a participation of the
significant number of young and enthusiastic dentists and Maxillo-facial
surgeons who formally have opened the NDA dental chapter. Congratulations
to all !

The highlight of Friday evening was entertainment programme performed by members
and families. Children contributed in an impressive way too. Bharat Natyam from
local Indian cultural group was well appreciated. This year, Nepali sisters
(Sophie, Karina & and Ambhika) performed spectacular show on Karate.
Pramestha Khoju continued performing her dance, as in previous years. Sangeeta
Rijal, with her little sister (who was copying Sangeeta) danced beautifully on
“Kajrare”. Dr Jamuna Achraya & Mrs Geeta Shrestha are still preserving
their beautiful voice. Dr Badri M Shrestha went into his past, as a young man,
singing a love song for his lovely wife. Thanks to Dr Gunja Man Sherchan, the
programme was well conducted.
Dr Leela Gautam, with an
active help of Dr Kapil Rijal, organised a raffle, raising £ 400.00 for the
Charity.

Saturday morning’s
scientific programme was made interesting with research paper presentations by:

1.
Dr Dhiraj
Tripathi (Consultant Physician & Hepatologist) - “Randomised Controlled
Trail of carvedilol Vs vericeal band ligation for the prevention of the first
vericeal bleed”.
2.
Dr Anne Shrestha
(FT1) - “Quality of life of the live kidney donors: a single centre
experience”.
3.
Dr Alice Shrestha (FT1)-“Quality of life following
live donor kidney transplantation: a single centre experience”.
(Anne and Alice are both recently qualified young
doctors. Congratulations to Anne & Alice!!!!!)
4. Dr
Sunil Shah (Specialist Registrar in Maxillo-facial surgery) - “Virtual
Panendoscopy: a new tool to help
evaluating oral cancer - a pilot study”.
The
scientific session concluded with the presentation on core topic “Renal
Transplantation: Current Perspectives” by Dr Badri Man Shrestha. Dr Shrestha
elaborated the topic in a simple way, and shared his experiences of hard work
with the members. Congratulation to Dr Shrestha on appointment, as Director of
Transplantation of Sheffield Kidney Institute!
Second half of the morning
concluded with the General Meeting. Discussions were held on various reports by
executive members, and chapter co-ordinators (please visit NDA journal 2008 link
for details). The meeting unanimously decided to support “Hospice
Nepal
” (a palliative care for cancer patients charity), and also decided to condemn
the recent kidnapping of Dr U P Devkota’s (senior neurosurgeon in
Nepal
) daughter. Members were excited to learn that NDA’s silver jubilee will be
held in year 2010, which will be organized by Dr Basanta Shrestha from
Chesterfield
.
In the morning families and
friends enjoyed yoga session held, where as in the afternoon members visited
beautiful “Chatsworth House”.
In
the evening, Gala dinner was held in the gracious presence of chief guest
Nepalese Ambassador to the
UK
his Excellency Mr M R Sharma and guest speaker, the mayor of
Rotherham
. A cheque, the amount of £400 was donated to “Rotherham Young Carers
Service”.
Dr
Prasanna Gautam, with autograph presented his newly released book “I
will break your
other leg” to Dr Narayan R
Joshi, for his excellent contributions to the NDA.
Dr
Arun Jha presented vice chairman’s award to Pramestha Khoju for her Friday
evening dance performance.
Dr
Milan Piya announced new achievements made by members and families in various
fields last year and Miss Meena Gautam delivered vote of thanks.
Being a very busy renal transplant surgeon Dr Badri Man Shrestha put his hard work on organising the meeting.
His hard work was well appreciated.

Sunday morning’s talks by Mr D Gale (NRN-UK chairman) and Mr Prakash
Khanal (Nepali Diaspora Volunteering Programme) was well attended. Nepali film
show “Kagbeni” was the centre of attraction.
NDA members, families and friends dispersed after Sunday lunch (Nepali
cuisine), organised by Dr and Mrs Madan Sharma from Manchester.
Many thanks to the organising committee: Dr BM Shrestha (organising
chairman), Mrs Sita Shrestha, Dr Basanta Shrestha, Mrs Nirmala Shrestha,
Dr Padam Kumar Rai, Mrs Bagala Rai, Dr Anne Shrestha, Dr Alice Shrestha and Miss Donna Shrestha
for their tireless efforts.
