Organ Donation
Workshop in Nepal
March 1st 2010, Kathmandu
An
Organ Donation Workshop was organised in Kathmandu which was attended
by transplant experts from the UK, India and Nepal and was well
participated by artists, Constituent assembly members, journalists,
lawyers, patients (both donor and recipients), health secretaries and
other health ministry officials .The function was inaugurated by health
minister Mr. Uma Kant Chowdhary. This is the first activity of its kind
in the country after just one and a half years of transplant surgery and
the first activity Aarogya Foundation group.
The workshop
focussed mainly on 4 key issues related to organ donation and
transplant:
Expansion of the live organ donor pool (beyond close relatives)
Gender
bias in live donor transplantation, from both legal, socio-cultural and
other issues in initiating deceased donor transplants
Measure
for generating public awareness about organ donation, both live and
deceased
Economic
sustainability of post-transplant immunosuppressant medication
The goals of the
workshop were:
To
raise the profile on transplantation and cadaver transplantation
particularly among key players in the health sector and the general
public
To
start the discussion about deceased donor donation
To gain
high profile support for transplantation in Nepal from internationally
recognised experts in the field
To bring
international perspective and experience to Nepal
To
discuss and network together to find ways forward to progress
transplantation in Nepal

Formal report is being prepared and will be submitted to Ministry to health and population soon.
The organising committee hopes that this will help nepali planning and policy makers to formulate strategy for organ donation and transplant n the country.

RAMJI
GAUTAM MEMORIAL AWARD for MD in Anaesthesiology
Under the active
leadership of Dr Achyut Dhital ( NDA (UK) Chairman: Year 2000-2001),
members contributed a sum of £4009.00 towards establishment of a fund
for "Ramji Gautam Memorial Award". This Fund was, then handed over to
Institute of Medicine, Maharajgung, Kathmandu in 2002 and deposited in
a fixed account. An interest from this fixed deposit has been set up
for an award for the top
most post graduate candidate in MD in Anaesthesiology.
Finally the award has been presented to
following young doctors who secured top most position in MD in
Anaesthesiology.
